Clinical Nurse (R/N) - Experienced - MEDICAL WARD

Job Summary

The Professional Nurse/Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised, holistic, and person-centered nursing care for patients, their families, or the community. This role involves coordinating patient care within a multidisciplinary health team, using scientifically based nursing theories and processes.

Consistency of Care

• Serve as a clinical resource in assisting personnel to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document nursing care in the unit.
• Ensure communication and interaction with family and health professionals regarding optimal patient care, acting as a patient advocate when necessary.
• Assess, plan, and implement advanced nursing care in a specialized field according to standard nursing care procedures, nursing care theory, and medical direction.
• Initiate, direct, and maintain emergency treatment as indicated.

Scope of Practice

• Interview patients and families to obtain relevant information and assess immediate and long-term needs.
• Participate in the multidisciplinary team to evaluate, develop, and implement health care plans and treatment regimes.
• Evaluate patients' care needs, initiate individualised nursing care plans, and coordinate patient services.
• Prepare shift documentation reflecting patient status, patient/staff ratio, and problems.
• Communicate with the unit manager regarding activities and problems.
• Perform related tasks as requested.

Policy and Procedure Development

Provide input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures in the hospital.

Quality and Risk Management

• Ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
• Optimise and maintain quality, effective, and safe nursing care within the assigned budget.
• Evaluate, set standards, and monitor the safe utilisation of supplies and equipment.

Teamwork

• Actively participate as a member of a team to achieve goals.
• Co-operate and collaborate with other hospital departments to provide appropriate support services.

Education and Training Facilitation

• Co-ordinate with the Clinical Facilitation Department and other members of the multidisciplinary team to meet the ongoing educational needs of nursing staff/students and patients.
• Participate in in-service training and orientation of new staff in the unit.
• Advise and inform staff on current and revised policies and procedures.

Resource Allocation

Allocate staff members to provide appropriate nursing care for individual patients, considering their needs and specialised skills required by nursing staff members.

Personal and Professional Development

• Actively involve in own professional development to maintain a satisfactory level of skill and knowledge.
• Keep up to date with Netcare’s evolving policies and procedures.

Build and Maintain Stakeholder Relationships

• Work effectively and co-operatively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships that are mutually beneficial.
• Develop collaborative relationships to help accomplish work goals.
• Maintain and encourage effective communication and interaction within the unit, other members of the multidisciplinary team, and the public.

Inherent Requirements

• Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• Thorough knowledge of general/specialised nursing theory and practice.
• Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices.
